It’s a sweet story about a 9-year-old girl who has had type 1 diabetes since she was 3. And she doesn’t want her new baby brother to get it, too. (They are so sweet when they’re this little; and so caring.) She doesn’t want him to have to take shots like she did. Currently, she is on an insulin pump.
But her baby brother is part of the Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet study where he receives baby formula that has 3 times the regular amount of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). What is that, you ask? Actually, it’s the omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, soybeans, and walnuts. (Kind of sounds like the fish oil supplement I use to treat my cholesterol.)
The article doesn’t say where this statistic comes from. But it states that this baby has a 78% chance of developing diabetes before he turns 5. Wow! That’s pretty high. But with a sibling that developed diabetes so young, I guess that makes him very susceptible.
I know you Moms of children with diabetes out there in the Diabetes OC know what it’s like to have a child with diabetes. I never experienced diabetes from that side since I was the one with diabetes. But I always watched my kids carefully & checked their BGs a lot to make sure they showed no signs of the disease. I’ve been blessed that both are now in their 20s & are still diabetes-free. But I always worried about this when they were little. I’m sure I’ll do the same thing when I have grandchildren.
So if they can do something to combat this disease before it happens, I’m all for it.
Bring on the fish oil!

And the walnuts!

And the Soybeans!
I don't want this baby or any other child, teen or adult to get this disease.Have a great weekend, everyone!
